Common troubleshooting guides

iPhone not detected

  1. Use an data-capable USB cable plugged directly into your Mac.
  2. Unlock your iPhone so the home screen is visible.
  3. Check if the iPhone appears in Finder in the sidebar.
  4. For Wi-Fi connections, connect via USB first to establish trust.

"Trust This Computer" prompt

  1. Unlock your iPhone when connecting via USB.
  2. Tap "Trust" on the alert shown on your iPhone screen.
  3. Enter your iPhone lock screen passcode to confirm.
  4. If the prompt does not appear, unplug and reconnect the USB cable.

Encrypted backup password

  1. Encrypted backups use the password you created in Finder or iTunes when enabling backup encryption.
  2. This is your backup password — never your Apple ID password.
  3. If you forgot the backup password, iOS only allows resetting backup encryption settings from your iPhone (Settings › General › Transfer or Reset iPhone › Reset › Reset All Settings) to make a new unencrypted backup.

Not enough disk space

  1. Select an external USB or Thunderbolt drive as your backup destination inside the app.
  2. Or enable "Lean mode" before starting the backup to keep only key databases (WhatsApp, Contacts) and save gigabytes of space.
